Argonaftis is an innovative shipping company that has been granted permission to operate the first ever Roll-On/Roll-Off (RoRo) ferry service in the SADC region. We're pioneering a cleaner, more efficient maritime logistics solution that links major SADC freight transport hubs, providing an alternative to the underinvested, congested road and rail network systems.
RoRo (Roll-On/Roll-Off) allows trailers and vehicles to be driven directly onto and off the ferry without the need for cranes. This provides 20-30% lower CO₂ emissions compared to heavy goods vehicles, 30-50% reduction in toxic pollutants, and up to 67% fuel efficiency savings compared to equivalent road transport. It's a proven intermodal transport solution that complements trucking rather than competing with it.
Our RoRo vessels will serve the major SADC ports including Durban, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Maputo (Mozambique), and Walvis Bay (Namibia). These routes are designed to connect the key freight transport hubs across the Southern African Development Community region, focusing on Short-Sea Shipping routes of less than 500 nautical miles.
Our vessels use Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO) and Ultra Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (ULSFO), meeting IMO 2020 emissions standards. By removing 150-250 truck engines from roads and replacing them with a single marine engine, we significantly reduce air pollution in cities. Ferry transport emits only 20-29g CO₂-e per tonne-kilometer, substantially less than road transport, supporting South Africa's Green Transport Strategy.
We're offering Convertible Loan Notes paying 14.4% per annum over a 3-year term. The business has been entirely founder-funded with over £2.5 million committed to R&D. We have secured agreements with major road haulage companies for minimum 80% capacity from day one, and each route is projected to be cashflow positive within the first year of operation.
We have secured MOUs with leading South African hauliers and logistics firms serving major global brands including Toyota, Heineken, and BMW. We're backed by major infrastructure funds and have strategic collaboration with Smart Freight Holland. All regulatory approvals from SADC port authorities have been secured, and port and sea trials have been completed.
We're targeting deployment of up to six vessels within 36 months through a phased rollout. Major infrastructure funds are backing the project with asset finance to secure the first two RoRo vessels. This scalable model is based on proven European ferry operations and positions Argonaftis to become a leading sea transport operator servicing the entire SADC region.
South Africa's transport infrastructure faces critical challenges with 78% of roads beyond their design life and 30% in poor condition. The government's Greenhouse Gas Mitigation Potential Analysis identifies modal shift as one of the most effective strategies for reducing transport emissions. Argonaftis is uniquely positioned as the first-mover in this market, creating significant barriers to entry for competitors.
